Ruth, I think your comment about the disillusionment of WWI combatants on both sides make an important point. There were no real victors, and there were no celebrations along the Western Front on Armistice Day, Nov. 11, 1918. We'll see a lot more of this kind of thing being considered in Fussell's book, but your suggestion that no other war went so un-celebrated seems right to me (although I'm no historian).
